Note-Taking: Collect Connections, Not Notes
Most notes are write-only memory
Almost everyone takes notes the same way: transcribe what they hear or read, into a notebook or an app, and then... never look at them again. The notes pile up, a growing archive nobody visits — write-only memory. It feels productive (you were busy, you captured things) but it does almost nothing, because the value of notes was never in storing the information. It's in what the note-making does to your thinking.
The reframe that changes everything: notes are a tool for thinking and connecting, not a warehouse for storing. A good note isn't a copy of what someone said — it's your re-expression of an idea, put in relationship with other ideas you already have. That's where understanding forms and where new insight comes from — not from having 500 notes, but from the connections between them. This lesson is how to take notes that actually make you smarter, instead of notes that just make you feel busy.

Don't copy — re-express in your own words
The most important rule, and the one everyone breaks: do not transcribe. Translate.
- Writing an idea in your own words forces you to understand it. Copying can be done on autopilot, understanding nothing (it's the recognition-not-understanding trap from LN-09). Re-expressing it requires you to actually process it — which is the entire point, and the reason the note is worth making. If you can't put it in your own words, you haven't understood it yet, and that's a signal, not a failure.
- Capture the idea, not the sentence. Ask "what's the actual point here, and why does it matter?" and write that — compact, in your voice. A note is a thought you had about the material, not a photograph of the material.
This is the "generation effect" put to work: you remember and understand what you produce far better than what you passively record (same engine as active recall, LN-01).
Atomic notes: one idea per note
Instead of long pages mixing ten things, write atomic notes — one idea each. A single note holds a single concept, claim, or insight, in your own words.
Why it matters: an idea trapped in the middle of a three-page lecture note is effectively lost — you'll never find it or reuse it. The same idea as its own small note can be found, linked, and combined with others. Atomic notes are the reusable units of thinking; long mixed pages are where ideas go to hide.
Keep each one short, self-contained (understandable on its own later), and titled with the idea itself, not the source.
The real move: link your notes to each other
Here is where most note systems fall short and where the actual power is: connect notes to other notes. When you make a note, ask "what does this relate to? What does it support, contradict, or build on?" — and link it there.
- Insight lives in the connections, not the individual notes. Seeing that an idea from a book links to something from a lecture links to a thought you had last month — that's where new understanding and original ideas come from. A pile of unconnected notes is a warehouse; a web of linked notes is a thinking tool.
- Linking forces you to relate new ideas to what you already know, which is exactly how learning works (you understand the new by attaching it to the known). The act of deciding "what does this connect to?" is thinking.
- Over time, the web grows into something more valuable than the sum of its notes — a map of how your ideas fit together, that you can follow, question, and build on.
This is the core of methods like the Zettelkasten ("slip-box"), which a prolific researcher used to produce an extraordinary body of work — not by storing notes, but by linking them and letting the connections generate ideas.
Reference notes vs thinking notes
A useful distinction:
- Reference notes — facts you need to find later (a formula, a date, a config setting). These just need to be searchable and correct; store and forget until needed.
- Thinking notes — ideas you want to develop and connect (a concept, an argument, an insight). These want the atomic-and-linked treatment above.
Don't apply the heavy method to everything — a phone number doesn't need connections. Reserve the re-express-and-link effort for the ideas you actually want to think with.
The tool doesn't matter (the habit does)
You can do this in a plain folder of text files, a notebook, or a dedicated linking app — the method matters far more than the software (same point as LN-02). What matters is the habits: re-express instead of copy, one idea per note, and always ask "what does this connect to?" A fancy app with copied transcripts is still write-only memory; a plain text folder of re-expressed, linked notes is a thinking system.
What this means for you
- Notes are for thinking and connecting, not storing. Piling up copied notes is write-only memory — busy, useless.
- Re-express in your own words, never transcribe — the processing is the value, and "I can't put it in my words" means you don't understand it yet (LN-09).
- Atomic notes (one idea each) are findable and reusable; ideas buried in long pages are lost.
- Link notes to each other — insight lives in the connections; linking forces you to relate new ideas to what you know.
- Separate reference notes (make findable) from thinking notes (make linked); the habit matters far more than the tool.
Exercise (35 min, verifiable output)
- Take something you're learning (a reading, a lecture, a video).
- Write five atomic notes from it — one idea each, in your own words, titled by the idea. No copying: if you can't re-express it, go re-learn that bit.
- Link them: connect each note to at least one other (from this batch or your existing notes) and write why they connect.
- Sort one as a reference note vs a thinking note and notice the different treatment.
- Write one sentence on a connection you only noticed because you linked them.
✅ Finish check: five atomic notes in your own words, each linked to at least one other with the reason for the connection — and one insight that surfaced from linking rather than from any single note.
