Salary Negotiation: Gross vs Net, Benefits, the Counter-Offer
→ A negotiation script for a real (or realistic) offer, with the take-home and total package worked out
Before this
ℹ️ This is education, not financial or legal advice. Tax and employment rules differ by country — use your own numbers and check local rules for anything binding.
What you'll have at the end
- The gap between gross and net (headline pay vs what lands in your account) worked out for a real offer
- The total package seen — not just salary — so you compare offers correctly
- A negotiation script: your anchor, your reasons, and your counter-offer, ready to say out loud
Prerequisite
- MN-11 — Building a Budget (you'll reason about take-home pay).
- SO-11 — Negotiation. This is that skill applied to money: BATNA, anchoring, and the zone where a deal exists.
The number they say is not the number you get — or the number that matters
Two illusions sink most first salary talks:
- Gross ≠ net. "£30,000" is the gross headline. After income tax and other deductions, the net — what actually reaches you — is meaningfully less. Negotiating in gross while living in net means you don't know what a raise is really worth.
- Salary ≠ total package. Two offers with the same salary can be worth very differently once you count pension, bonus, healthcare, holiday, remote work and progression.
Fix both and you negotiate the real thing, not the headline.
